On The Lead with Michael Grange


On The Lead is the TDN Q&A series that
looks to find out more about the people who have led our racing and breeding
stars through the sales rings in Europe. In this episode we’re at Tattersalls for
the December Yearling Sales and Michael Grange is answering our questions. I worked for a studs near home when I
left school so I was about 18 and I went to the sales with them. It was actually
the local hunt that I hunt with they have a stud on the estate where they
were and I worked for them and yeah they sold all the major sales that’s how it
started. My best horse I’ve lead at the sales
was Zanzibar, she won the group one Italian Oaks for Michael Bell but that
was a long long time ago. That was one of my first horses I took through the ring
as well. She was nice, she was very pretty, lots of white, flashy, yeah very sweet
very easy to do. The friendliness of everybody.
Meeting lots of people the contacts you make to further one. My pro-tip for the sales season is
probably to buy a decent pair of comfortable shoes, we’re going to be doing
lots and lots of walking and you don’t be a discomfort for the whole day. I like the yearling sales, I just like
the buzz, everybody wants to lead a high price yearling out of the sales door. Yeah,
the yearling sales are definitely favorites. I do whatever the Irish are
doing. They are the the best ones to go out with the evening and yeah they
definitely know how to enjoy themselves.
